Re: [AMD] Airfix 747-200 kit 1/144

Charles,

There's been a lot on AMD recently about 'the worse airline kits' and the Airfix 747 was often mentioned, so I would suggest you review the last couple of weeks messages.  General consensus appears to be that the Revell 747 Classic is best.  Neither is up to the standard of the Hasegawa 747 Classic kit and the Airfix offering requires a lot of work to get a decent representation of the real thing.  BraZ offer three of the engine types used on the 747 Classic, including the CF6-50; Hannants stock BraZ.

FYI, apart from some leased aircraft, all of BOAC/BA PW-powered 747s were -100s.  Their own 747-200s were RR-powered, although they did lease and aquire some PW- & GE-powered examples.  Several airlines including BA had their 747-100s modified post delivery to have 10 upper deck windows and certainly in the case of BA (and perhaps others) they also had a second upper deck door added.  This was to allow the upper deck to be used as a full passenger cabin rather then just a lounge.

Subject: [AMD] Airfix 747-200 kit 1/144

Hello there! I was wanting to ask for advice or any comments on the 1/144 scale Airfix 747 kit with British Airways and Alitalia decals. This is my first model in many years that's a 1/144 since I build Hasegawa 200 scale kits. My guess is, that this kit is a -200 series since it has at least 10 windows on the top. Is Airfix still making kits today? This kit was produced in the U.K. and its well detailed. I tried looking for pictures of it here but can't tell if there's any difference between a Revell 747 classic and an Airfix 747 kit. I know Revell made the 747-400s but this kit was unopened.

Also, I'm hoping to find aftermarket GE engines for the 747 since I want to build it in Alitalia colors. Can anyone recommend a website that sells the conversion engines for an Airfix 747 kit? Thanks!

Charles
